I can't say I'm surprised by this. The most recognizable trophies in English sports (the Ryder Cup and the Claret Jug) actually resemble drinking vessels. Even the World Cup trophy, while not actually a cup, is proportioned like one. Only the Stanley "Cup" is bizarrely inverted, with the giant-ass base at the bottom. Being a hockey non-fan, I'd probably have done the same thing.
