BUT there are still allegations that the extra registrations are translating to actual votes for one particular candidate...
Can you explain to me how that would work?
I can't. I'm just saying the allegations are out there.
"Furthermore, as this mega organization with a decades long history of violating the law is turned to get out the vote efforts, we believe it is fair to question how many fraudulent registrations may lead to fraudulent votes or what other activities they are willing to undertake to influence the election." ("CRL Testimony On ACORN's Voter Fraud," The Wall Street Journal, 9/25/08)
Can you explain why SSN verification is costing people their rightful votes? Not to beat the same horse all day but we're in similar boats if you can't.
G.G.: Can you explain why SSN verification is costing people their rightful votes?

Not trying to be a jerk, but did you read the whole article? I'm not sure I can lay it out any better than that.
From the article:"The screening or trimming of voter registration lists... could also result in problems at the polls on Election Day: people who have been removed from the rolls are likely to show up only to be challenged... resulting in confusion, long lines & heated tempers. Some state allow such voters to cast provisional ballots. But they are often not counted because they require added verification."
It's not just an SSN issue..."MI & CO are removing voters from the rolls within 90 days of a federal election, which is not allowed except when voters die, notify authorities that they have moved out of state, or have been declared unfit to vote."
...although the SSN issue is also in play..."The requirement exists because using the federal database is less reliable than the state lists and is more likely to incorrectly flag applicantions as invalid."
...I'm just shocked that Fox news isn't covering this with more fervor.
Guile: Not trying to be a jerk, but did you read the whole article?

Now I have. It seems significantly f-d up but your article does mention this:
The actions do not seem to be coordinated by one party or the other, nor do they appear to be the result of election officials intentionally breaking rules, but are apparently the result of mistakes in the handling of the registrations and voter files as the states tried to comply with a 2002 federal law, intended to overhaul the way elections are run.
I take it you suspect foul play?
G.G.: I take it you suspect foul play?
Not entirely. I don't think the GOP is orchestrating this. The situation in Ohio (mentioned in the article) seems shady, but at this point I'll accept that it's an isolated incident in a highly contested state.
I do think, however, that the Republicans are less likely to pursue this issue (or admit that it exists) because any problems caused by this will likely benefit them. Drawing such attention to the ACORN issue while ignoring this does kind of point in that direction.
I guess it's that whole "consistency" issue.
I don't watch Fox News so I'm not sure how much coverage they're giving it and, yes, there should be outrage from the Republicans.
Nick: Newman: Nick: G.G.: Nick: G.G.: Nick: CONSISTENTLY OUTRAGED! Like how you guys are over this? Go re-read the ENTIRE sentence you quoted. We should be outraged over fraud consistently and not just when it benefits our candidates. That's deep but I'm managing to keep up. You're just as outraged now as you were in 2004, right? If this were an allegation of actual voter fraud or voter suppression, you bet your fucking ass I would be. I'm still outraged, but to a slightly lesser extent. Hopefully ACORN takes it upon themselves to rememdy this situation. ACORN has done great work in helping low-income people afford housing. like this only serves to tarnish the otherwise great work they do. I understand that a person who approaches everything as if it were a competition would have trouble understanding that for some people, ideal trumps team. It's my understanding that ACORN played a big role in the financial crisis we're currently involved in. Anyone have any info on that or am I way off here? I've never heard that, but I suppose if I was a conservative looking to draw the blame away from mortgage lenders like Countrywide that have based a huge portion of their business around sub-prime mortgage lending, I'd probably go after some "liberal" organization that's been helping low-income households become homeowners for the last 38 years and probably have at least a couple families let their homes go into foreclosure. But I have nothing to back that up.

I'm not trying to draw blame away from anyone, Nick, least of all Countrywide. I'll do some research on this and report back. At this point I don't see why a group like ACORN should get any government money based on the way they conduct their organization.
G.G. Where have you been?
This happened 2 days ago
Is McCain tied to this group like Obama's tied to ACORN?
My mistake, I thought you were outraged over voter registration fraud. Nevermind...
Nick: My mistake, I thought you were outraged over voter registration fraud. Nevermind...
Ha! Ok, you got me. At first glance I thought it was just the Jacoby dude who registered himself illegally. I didn't realize he was duping people into registering Republican.
This is no good.
Ok, now I am seriously getting pissed off.

The Daily Kos, huh? I haven't seen this reported anywhere else.

rocket88: So I saw this thing on Fox News this morning about "voter fraud" going on. First of all, I'm a bit suspicious that no other news outlets are covering this at all, not even to refute it. Secondly, apparently it's only happening in "battleground states." We all know that elections in Texas or California are absolutely fair apparently, but watch out for Pennsylvania and Ohio! Somehow, I think that this won't end on election day. If Obama wins any of those states, the right's going to come out in such a way that makes Al Gore look gracious in defeat.

This is like comparing Apples and Nachos.
OBAMA is up in CA by some 15-20 points. MCCAIN is up in TX by (roughly) the same. Those states aren't very competitive.
States like OH, FL, and VA look to be neck and neck. I would expect there to be a bit more scrutiny involved considering it's the Presidential election.
Let's put a smile on that face

I've seen it reported several times and it's disturbing.
